Independent retail supermarket group IGA has started labelling its tuna cans telling consumers which tuna species is inside and where it was caught.
In the four months since Greenpeace first launched the Canned Tuna Guide, consumer pressure has led to major changes in the tuna market.
Greenpeace oceans campaigner Genevieve Quirk said ñBefore the guide came out, most people didnÍt know where their tuna came from, or that turtles, sharks and juvenile tuna get killed in tuna nets. Since then thousands of people have written outraged emails demanding that the tuna companies behind these brands clean up their act, and theyÍve listened.î
IGA supermarkets and independent stores have also started stocking Fish 4 Ever, a new brand that uses sustainable pole and line caught Skipjack tuna.
